Monument to the Expatriate Greek

Honour to the contribution of expatriate Greeks to the cultural and social life of the country

The Monument to the Greek Expatriate is a sculpture depicting three interconnected figures: One male, one female and one child. The female figure tenderly holds an infant in her arms, symbolizing the continuity of the Greek family and the struggle of expatriates to maintain a connection with their homeland.

On the front of the pedestal of the monument are engraved verses from Homer's Odyssey, expressing the nostalgia and the strong desire of expatriates to return to their homeland, even for a moment. On the side of the monument is the title of the work and the date of its creation (1981), as well as the name of the creator, Polygnotos Vagi.

The monument is located in front of the Society for Macedonian Studies, in the centre of Thessaloniki, and commemorates the enduring contribution of expatriate Greeks to the cultural and social life of the country.
