Monastery of Profitis Ilias of Serres

The monastery with the wonderful view, reminiscent of a medieval castle

About 8 km east of the town of Serres, on a verdant hill north of the village of Agio Pneuma, the visitor finds a monastery that architecturally resembles a medieval castle.

The Holy Monastery of Profitis Ilias was organized as a nunnery in 1990 and in a short time, it took its present form. In the ruins of an old church built in 1900, a new Katholikon was erected in the center of the monastic buildings, in the Athonite style, preserving part of the walls. The view from the monastery is stunning, as it has access to the entire Serraikos plain.

Holy relics are kept in the monastery, such as those of Saint Gregory V, Saint Nicholas of Plana, and Saint Philothea of Athens, among other relics. It is celebrated on 20 July and 24 September.
