Strymon River Delta

One of the most significant and biodiverse wetland areas in Central Macedonia

The Strymon River Delta is one of the most important and biodiverse wetlands in Central Macedonia. The area extends around the river's mouth into the Strimonian Gulf and is designated as a protected site within the Natura 2000 network.

The coastal delta hosts a variety of ecosystems, including salt marshes, brackish lagoons, wet meadows, and reed beds. These ecosystems provide refuge for numerous aquatic species that breed in the area, as well as for migratory and wintering birds.

The Strymon Delta also serves as a crucial migratory stopover for rare and endangered bird species, making the region an essential destination for researchers and nature enthusiasts. Visitors to the delta have the opportunity to observe and record unique species that seek food and shelter in the wetland expanses.
