"Mihalis's Hole" Cave

The Impressive Chasm in Vermio

The "Mihalis's Hole" Cave is one of the most striking geological phenomena in Northern Greece and the second deepest chasm in the area, reaching a depth of 145 meters.

Located in limestone, the cave features dramatic geological formations inside. Various birds find refuge within the cave, adding a lively dimension to its mysterious atmosphere.

The cave is divided into three main sections. The initial chasm has a depth of 50 meters and is naturally illuminated by the large opening at its entrance. This section is characterized by a large platform with soil, branches, and bird droppings. The path continues on a sloping floor towards the second chasm, which leads to a dark environment and is interrupted by a second platform, 30 meters lower. The final section includes a single descent of 70 meters into the depths of the cave. The chasm ends in a spacious chamber with a sloping floor where water dripping is particularly intense and the walls show minimal decoration.

Access to the cave is easy, via a dirt road from Selli and then through a well-marked trail of approximately 15 minutes. The cave's name is associated with a local legend about a shepherd named Mihalis, who is said to have fallen into the chasm with his sheep and ended up in the Sarantovryses area, in the plain of Veria.
