The Pasha's Gardens

Ascending towards the Castles (Kastra) , behind the "Agios Dimitrios" hospital, the lush green area of approximately one thousand square meters known as the "Pasha's Gardens" offers relaxation, recreation, and a wonderful view of the city and the Thermaic Gulf for over a century. The enclosed urban park next to the Church of Agios Pavlos was completed in 1904 and was initially part of the hospital (then called "Hamidiye"), occupying an area granted by the church.

Apart from its role as a green oasis in the city center, the park stands out for its highly distinctive architecture, some examples of which can still be seen today. The elaborate fountain, the dead-end arcade, the pond, the small unrelated buildings, the pathways, and the stairs with untreated stone and iron railings give the impression that they were placed by chance but create a surreal setting reminiscent of a fossilized forest or a dreamlike landscape, making the Pasha's Gardens a unique emblematic monument.

The origin of its name remains a mystery to this day. Theories about its origins and urban legends have accompanied discussions among the residents for decades. In any case, the Pasha's Gardens are worth visiting to admire the city in all its grandeur, take a breath of fresh air, and attempt to interpret the thoughts of its creators in the early twentieth century.
