Neolithic settlement of Nea Nikomideia
Neolithic settlement of Nea Nikomideia
A site with rich historical and archaeological value
The Neolithic settlement of Nea Nikomideia, located 13 km north of Veroia, is one of the most important prehistoric sites in Macedonia and is internationally recognized for its historical and archaeological value. This site offers a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the roots of European civilization and discover aspects of life in prehistoric times.
The settlement of Nea Nikomideia belongs to the type of tuba, i.e. an artificial mound, and its occupation dates back to the last quarter of the 7th millennium BC. The excavation, which began in the 1990s, has revealed 24 pile-dwelling houses, showing the organisation and architecture of the early communities.
Some of the most impressive finds include a possible shrine, suggesting the existence of religious beliefs and practices, ceramic ovens, pottery, vessels, figurines and a number of stone tools used in daily life. Three rare stone effigies of frogs, carved in green serpentine, have also been found, which are extremely rare finds for the period of the settlement.
