The History of Railways in Greece

The Thessaloniki Railway Museum is located in the municipality of Ampelokipi-Menemeni, just a short distance from the city center of Thessaloniki. Established in 2001, the museum is housed in a historic building of the old railway station of the city, which dates back to 1894. Originally, this building was used as a military station during the Ottoman period and later served as a passenger station.

The museum boasts an impressive collection of items related to the history of railways in Greece, particularly in Northern Greece. It exhibits old railway vehicles, such as steam locomotives, carriages, and traction engines, as well as tools and equipment used in the maintenance and operation of the railways. One of the most significant exhibits is the steam locomotive "Lilais," which dates back to the early 20th century.

The museum also includes archival material, photographs, and documents related to the history of the railways, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the development and the social and economic significance of the railway in the region.

In addition to its permanent exhibits, the Thessaloniki Railway Museum organizes educational programs and events aimed at raising public awareness and spreading the history of railways to younger generations.
