The Tower of Agios Vasileios

The Impressive Medieval Tower Overlooking Lake Koroneia

The Tower of Agios Vasileios, a significant medieval structure, is located on the southern shore of Lake Koroneia, near a route connecting Thessaloniki with the southern branch of the Egnatia Odos. Constructed in the 14th century AD, it stands as a typical example of the defensive architecture of that era.

The tower measures approximately 10x10 meters and rises to a height of 15 meters. It is likely that the tower was associated either with the fortifications of Thessaloniki or with the supply of goods to the city from the surrounding region, known for its fertile land and proximity to Lake Koroneia. The construction method used is known as the "incomplete cloisonné system," characterized by the use of large stones and bricks bound together with lime mortar, and reinforced with wooden beams along the perimeter.

For security reasons, the entrance to the tower is located on the eastern side, at the second level, making it less accessible to potential attackers. In recent years, restoration work has been carried out on the tower's masonry, making it accessible to the public and preserving the history of the area for future generations.
