Tassos Toussis Monument
Tribute to the hero of the working class
The monument to Tasos Tousis in Asvestochori, Thessaloniki, is an important tribute to one of the most famous heroes of the working class in Greece.
The sculpture is made of bronze and copper, placed on a marble base, giving it an imposing and timeless appearance. Engraved on its front are the moving verses from Yannis Ritsos' "Epitaph", written for Tasos Toussis' mother:
MY SWEETHEART YOU ARE NOT LOST
YOU ARE IN MY VEINS
MY SON IN THE VEINS OF THE LUNGS
"GO DEEP AND ASK
These lyrics express the deep sorrow and the eternal memory of Tasos Toussis, who is not lost but lives on in the veins of all those who continue the struggle for justice.
Tasos Toussis was a worker who was murdered during a strike, which made him a symbol of the labour movement. His murder was imprinted on the Greek consciousness and inspired Yannis Ritsos to write 'Epitaph', one of the most important works of Greek literature.
The monument was unveiled on 19 June 1988, in the presence of Tassos Toussis' sister, Marika Toussis Bochalis, a gesture that formalized the recognition of his sacrifice.
The monument is located in Asvestochori, Thessaloniki, on 25th March Street, which is the main road to Exochi.
