Monument to the Fallen Workers
Monument to the Fallen Workers
The "Monument to the Fallen Workers" in Thessaloniki is a moving tribute to the memory of the workers who sacrificed themselves during their demands. The sculpture, by sculptor Angelos Vlassis, depicts a mother mourning over the body of her dead son, Tassos Toussis, the first dead during the events of May 1936.
The monument is made of brass and rests on a series of iron rods, while the mother's hands and the limbs of the deceased go out of context, giving a dramatic feel and perspective to the work. It was erected in 1997, by order of the Workers' Center of Thessaloniki and is located just outside the building of the Center, on Olympou Street, in the park opposite the church of St. Demetriou.
Every year, on Labor Day, wreaths are laid at the monument, honoring the struggles and sacrifices of the workers. This monument, along with the one in Asvestochori, birthplace of Tassos Toussis, is a constant reminder of the importance of the labour movement and human sacrifice for the conquest of rights.
