Monument "Woman of Pindos 1940"

Dedicated to the women of Epirus from the Pindos region

The bust of the "Woman of Pindos" is located at Fanarioton Square, at the intersection of Pavlou Mela, Mitropoleos, and Stratigou Kallari streets in Thessaloniki. The statue was installed in 1990 during Kosmopoulos' tenure as mayor and was a donation from the Epirus Cultural Association, honoring the women of Epirus from the Pindos region. These women provided significant assistance to the Greek Army during the first phase of the Greco-Italian War in 1940. The sculpture, created by sculptor Kostas Domboulas, is made of bronze and stands on a marble base. It depicts an Epirus woman dressed in heavy military attire, carrying ammunition on her back. Her right foot is placed on a rock, symbolizing a forceful movement and adding dynamism to the sculpture.

On the marble base, the inscription reads:

Women of Epirus, wonders of nature, enemy, why didn’t you ask, whom you are about to conquer?”

This monument highlights the contribution of women to the struggle for freedom and their resilience during difficult times.
