Bust of Takis Kanellopoulos
Sculpture-recognition of the great director's contribution to Greek cinema
The bust of Takis Kanellopoulos, one of the most important Greek filmmakers, adorns the Tsirogiannis Park in Thessaloniki. The sculpture depicts Kanellopoulos at a young age, achieving an emotional connection with the audience.
The bust is the work of sculptor Aspasia Papadoperaki. At the bottom of the pedestal, abstract figures depict elements from his films, the titles of which are engraved on the marble. As you approach the bust, you notice a bronze rose, circles and birds, which add a poetic dimension to the work.
Among the references to his films, the titles "Heaven", "Macedonian Wedding", "Excursion", "Parenthesis" and "Sonia" stand out. The human figures on the back of the bust reinforce the sense of dramatization that characterizes Kanellopoulos' work.
In 1993, the Municipality of Thessaloniki decided to honour Kanellopoulos by placing his bust in Tsirogiannis Park, next to the Officers' Club and the Alexandros Cinema. This area is full of history and culture, as it is also home to the statue of Pavlos Melas, the bust of Papafi, and the recently relocated busts of the Macedonian gladiators that were removed from the Macedonian Gladiators Park in Agia Sophia due to the metro works.
The bust of Takis Kanellopoulos is not only a sculpture, but also a recognition of his contribution to Greek cinema, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire future generations.
