Aggista Station Bridge

The stunning arched bridge on the river Aiggitis

The most famous bridge of the Serres region is located near the Station of Aggista, in the settlement that was named after the architecturally monumental but now inactive railway station of the village since the 1930s.

It joins two banks of the river Aggitis, allowing passage from the fertile Serres plain to Paggaio, making it a strategic crossing from antiquity, where its original construction was located. In the Ottoman period, it took its final form, being 59 metres long, 4,5 metres wide and 6 metres high from its foundations.

It was built using chipped limestone and is the only arched bridge in Eastern Macedonia. It has five pointed arches, four of which are visible today. As an attraction, it is breathtaking, not only in its construction but also in its aesthetic integration into the landscape of the Aggitis, which, especially in the spring and summer months, is filled with colour. There is also a refreshment area for visitors to the site, which is ideal for relaxation and rejuvenation, and also as a starting point for one of the most beautiful pedestrian routes.
