Ouziel Neighborhood
A Traditional Interwar Settlement in the Center of Thessaloniki
The Ouziel Neighborhood in Thessaloniki is a small area established in 1927, consisting of 28 single-family homes. The neighborhood was designed by the contractor David Ouziel, a key shareholder of the Thessaloniki Tram Company, and was developed in collaboration with the prominent architect Jacques Moshe.
The architecture of the neighborhood reflects the charm and functionality of its era, blending traditional elements with modern influences. Although the Ouziel Neighborhood may not be the most famous of Moshe's projects, his designs for other buildings, such as the Olympion cinema on Aristotelous Square and the Olympus-Nausa restaurant, are widely recognized.
The connection of Ouziel with the Tram Company led to the belief that the neighborhood was designed to house workers and employees of the nearby tram depot, which contributed to the area's old name, Depot, meaning "warehouse." Today, the neighborhood retains its historical significance and offers a unique glimpse into Thessaloniki's architectural heritage.
