Old Philosophy School of AUTH
One of Thessaloniki's Most Iconic Buildings
The Old Philosophy School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) is one of the most emblematic buildings in the city, located in the Municipality of Thessaloniki. Constructed in 1887, it was designed by the Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli and initially housed the Public Preparatory School. The building's distinctive architecture reflects the influences of its era and the development of education in the region.
In 1908, two lateral wings were added, increasing the building's capacity to accommodate more students. During the Balkan Wars in 1912, the building was converted into a Second Military Hospital, serving the needs of military healthcare. In 1917, following the liberation of Thessaloniki, the university was moved to the building, which defined its future use.
From 1917 to 1932, the building underwent further construction, additions, and expansions, with plans by architect Alexandros Dragoumis in collaboration with I. Dimitriadis. During the German occupation, it was used again as a military hospital. Today, the Old Philosophy School remains an integral part of the history of higher education in Thessaloniki, continuing to host significant academic activities.
