Lithotopos Dam
Lithotopos Dam
The magnificent work on the Strymon River that created Lake Kerkini
Lake Kerkini, the beautiful wetland that gives life to the plain of Serres, was created artificially through the construction of a dam on the river of Strymon in 1932. Half a century later, a new dam was built due to a reduction in the capacity of Kerkini, with seven large gates regulating its level. Lithotopos, the semi-mountainous village located at the dam site, gained a unique view of the area, where the combination of the waters and the surrounding landscape is breathtaking.
In Lithotopos there is an Ecotourism Promotion Office, with exhibits of birds, insects, and plants of the area. At the same time, visitors will find facilities for alternative tourism and sports activities. But the main attraction is none other than the spectacular sight of the magnificent combination of man-made intervention and natural beauty, which results in the unique landscape of the lake that defines the entire natural environment of the region.
