Former Kazes School - Saint Stylianos Municipal Infant Home
A Building of Significant Historical and Architectural Value
The building currently housing the Saint Stylianos Municipal Infant Home in Thessaloniki has a rich and diverse history, closely tied to the Jewish Community of the city and post-war social welfare.
Initially, the building was constructed by the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki to accommodate the Municipal School of the "Benosilio" settlement, also known as Settlement 151. This settlement was established after the devastating fire that ravaged the city center in 1917, which necessitated the housing of many Jewish community families. The school operated from 1919 under the auspices of the Alliance Universelle Israelite and was later renamed the "Kazes School" in honor of Jacob Kazes, the president of the Jewish Community.
With the onset of World War II, the building was repurposed as a military hospital. However, in 1942, it was transformed into the Saint Stylianos institution, which had been founded by the Greek Orthodox Community in 1912 to protect infants and young children. Since then, the institution has continued to provide vital social welfare services, now managed by the Municipality of Thessaloniki.
