Allatini Mansion - Central Macedonia Region
Allatini Mansion - Central Macedonia Region
A Historic Building from the Late 19th Century
The Allatini Mansion, designed by the Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli, was built before 1888 as a summer residence for Karolos Allatini. The Allatini family was one of Thessaloniki's most powerful business dynasties, alongside the Modiano family.
This mansion was the largest and most luxurious among several located in the Exoches area, a suburban district where wealthy residents of the city traditionally built their summer homes. The villa is situated near the Allatini Mills, at the center of a large courtyard, and is distinguished by its use of bricks on its façades.
Between 1909 and 1912, the mansion housed the exiled Sultan Abdulhamid II, following the Young Turk Revolution. In 1926, it served briefly as the newly established Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and was later used as a military hospital.
Since 1979, the building has housed services of the Ministry of Interior, initially the Prefecture of Thessaloniki and currently the Central Macedonia Region. The Allatini Mansion is a significant monument of Thessaloniki's architectural heritage and one of the city's major cultural sites.
