Agista Villa

A Major Archaeological Site with Roman Era Finds

The Agista Villa, also known as the Villa of Angkista, is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Serres region. Located near the village of Agista, it represents a location of rich history dating back to the Roman and Late Roman periods.

The villa was uncovered through archaeological excavations and features characteristics of Roman architecture. Its position within the broader network of Roman settlements in Macedonia makes it particularly important for understanding the lives of the wealthy landowners and nobility of the time. The villa likely belonged to a wealthy Roman official or landowner, who used the complex both as a residence and as an administrative center for his agricultural estates.

The villa is built in the typical Roman architectural style, with a central courtyard (peristylium) around which the rooms are arranged. Noteworthy is the villa’s decoration, which includes mosaic floors and frescoes depicting various scenes of daily life, mythological figures, and geometric patterns.

Today, the Agista Villa is an archaeological site of interest that attracts visitors and researchers. Although the monument is not fully restored, ongoing archaeological excavations continue to provide new insights into the history and culture of the region during antiquity.

Visitor access to the site is limited and usually requires coordination with local archaeological authorities. Nevertheless, it is an important destination for those interested in the history and archaeology of the Serres area.
