Monastery of Agia Kyriaki in Alistrati

One of the oldest monasteries in the region

Situated in the lush landscape surrounding Alistrati, approximately two kilometers from the settlement, is the Holy Monastery of Agia Kyriaki.

It is one of the oldest monasteries in the area, with its foundation dating back to the 1850s. Since then, it has experienced periods of prosperity as well as abandonment. In the early 20th century, the monastery was involved in agriculture, owning vineyards and engaging in animal husbandry. Additionally, it served as a place of refuge for refugees during the population exchange of 1922.

The old main church was demolished, and a new one was built in its place, preserving only the original entrance. Some accounts describe the monastery as resembling a medieval castle before its destruction by natural disasters and raids prior to the liberation of Serres.Since 1953, it has been transformed into a women's monastery. After a period of neglect, it was revitalized in 2014, and today it continues its spiritual mission. The feast day is celebrated on July 7th, with a festival on November 2nd.
