Sarakatsani Folklore Museum

The only museum in the world about the nomadic life of the Sarakatsanians

Unique worldwide in its subject matter, the Folklore Museum of Sarakatsans has been operating in Serres since 1979, while since 1998 it is located in a newly built facility that was erected exclusively for the purpose of exhibiting the museum's collection.

The art and life of the Sarakatsanians is presented on three levels (basement, ground floor, and mezzanine floor) through representations and objects that reflect their nomadic way of life. The small space, given the needs of the collection, led to the organization of a museum with a concentrated presentation of the nomadic life, where the most important and special features give visitors a glimpse of Sarakatsanian life, especially in the first half of the 20th century.

Weaving and embroidery play a dominant role and there is an extensive presentation of the Sarakatsanians craftsmanship in clothing and decoration with fabrics. The loom is shown, the hut with woven grasses, capturing in every form the basic element of Sarakatsanian life, that is, the ongoing ephemeral nature of residence as the Sarakatsanians moved constantly, between the seasons, from the plains to the mountains, together with their herds. This creates a great interest in every aspect of the culture they developed, such as education, household chores, daily life, love life, survival, and every form of social relationship following their constant migratory journey.
