Old Metropolitan Museum of Serres
Old Metropolitan Museum of Serres
The Home of Sculptures and Monuments from the Church of Saints Theodores
The Old Metropolitan Museum of Serres was established to house Byzantine sculptures and funerary monuments related to the Church of Saints Theodores, also known as the Old Metropolitan. This Byzantine church, which has been repurposed as a pilgrimage site, serves as the central point around which the museum has developed.
The exhibition is located in the northern annex of the monument and extends into the courtyard. Visitors can admire various sculptures that once adorned the church, as well as inscriptions and sculptures from different periods originating from the broader Serres area. The museum’s displays provide a concise overview of the city’s history, its fortifications, and the monument itself, offering visitors a comprehensive view of the region’s rich Byzantine heritage.
The two later annexes on the north side of the church have been renovated and adapted to function as museum spaces. The eastern annex, a single-room domed space likely of funerary character, and the western annex, a long vaulted hall, have been fitted with wooden roofing and equipped with clay tiles on the floor, providing an appropriate space for displaying the museum’s valuable exhibits.
