Byzantine Tower of Mara

The Byzantine Tower of Mara, located in Dafni, Serres, is a historic monument of great cultural significance. It is associated with Mara Branković, one of the most important figures of the era, daughter of the Despot of Serbia, George Branković. Mara, who became the wife of Sultan Murad II, was known for her support of the Christian faith and culture during the 15th century.

The tower, originally a three-story structure, followed the typology of the towers in the Athonite metochia (monastic estates) and was used as a residence. After Mara's death in 1487, the area of Dafni and the surrounding villages remained under her protection, as she had granted extensive land to the Monasteries of Mount Athos.

Today, a portion of the tower still stands, serving as a point of interest for visitors and a reminder of the rich history of the region. The tower was preserved from destruction due to its resilient construction and remains a symbol of the history of Dafni and Mara Branković.
