Bust of Kyriakos Matsis

In honour of the Cypriot fighter

The bust of Kyriakos Matsis at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) is a tribute to the Cypriot hero and graduate of the University's Faculty of Agriculture. Kyriakos Matsis, who graduated from the Faculty of Agriculture in 1952, was particularly associated with the city of Thessaloniki and left an indelible mark on the liberation struggle of Cyprus.

The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki honoured his memory with the construction of a monument in the area opposite the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. The monument was unveiled on 5 December 1976 by the then Rector Ioannis Deligiannis. A few years later, in 1988, the National Student Union of Cypriots of Thessaloniki proposed the erection of a bust of Matsis at the same spot.

This bust, which was unveiled on 2 April 1989 by the Minister of Education of the Republic of Cyprus, Andreas Philippou, is located on the site of the monument and is a reference point for the connection between Matsi and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The bust, made of bronze, represents the hero in a serious and determined style, paying respect and recognition to his work and sacrifice.
