Bust of Makis (Ioakeim) Alexiadis
Bust of Makis (Ioakeim) Alexiadis
In honor of the hero of Kalamaria.
The bust of Makis (Ioakeim) Alexiadis, one of the heroes of Kalamaria, stands as a symbol of remembrance and tribute to his selfless sacrifice during the Occupation. Made of bronze, the bust realistically captures the features of Alexiadis, known as the "Makis of Kalamaria," and is placed on a marble pedestal. It is located at Aretsou Beach, in a park that bears his name, serving as a small but significant tribute to his heroism and self-sacrifice.
Ioakeim Alexiadis (1915-1944), a mathematics professor and member of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), was part of the Thessaloniki Committee of the National Liberation Front (EAM). During the Occupation, he was arrested by Nazi collaborators, members of the Daggoulas gang, and brutally tortured. He was executed on July 16, 1944, at the age of just 28, and his body was discarded on the road to Lagkadikia.
The bust of Makis Alexiadis serves as a reminder to the residents and visitors of Kalamaria of the struggle and resistance of the Greek people against the occupiers, as well as the personal sacrifice of a man who gave his life for freedom.
