Holy Cross Monastery in Agio Pnevma
Holy Cross Monastery in Agio Pnevma
The chapel that became a monastery in Menoikio
In 1964, the inhabitants of the village of Agio Pnevma, 15 km from Serres, built a chapel on a hill next to the village. The building in the verdant area of Menoikio received special care from the locals and gradually new buildings (guesthouses, cells, and monasteries) were built around it to create the current Monastery of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which is celebrated on 14 September.
The monastery did not have a sisterhood until 1985 when the first nuns settled there. With their personal work, new rooms were created and the Katholikon was decorated with hagiographies. Today the convent has an exhibition of handicrafts and offers hospitality to the faithful in its guest houses.
