The "Athonite" monastery in Kerkini
A combination of traditional Athonite architecture and an amazing view from the foothills of the lush green Belles Mountains towards Kerkini make the Monastery of Timios Prodromos in Akritochori one of the most unique monasteries in the region. It was built in 1981 and it is home to about forty nuns.
Its characteristic feature is that each side of the Katholikon has a different aspect. It was inaugurated in 2012, has an area of 500 square meters, and was built according to the standards of the original Katholikon of the Monastery of Xenophontos of Mount Athos, of which hermitage is a metochion, while it was built only with traditional materials such as stone, marble and ceramic bricks. The altar was painted by nuns of the hermitage and the Katholikon by monks of the Monastery of Xenophontos.
The nuns are engaged in hagiography, in sewing of priestly robes, as well as farming and animal husbandry.
The monastery celebrates on August 29, the day of the Deposition of the head of John the Baptist. It is about two hours by road from Thessaloniki and 45 minutes from Serres.
