Church of Saint George of Sitochori

Important religious and cultural monument of the 18th century

The Holy Church of Agios Georgios in Sitochori, near Nigrita, is an important religious and cultural monument of the region. The construction of the church dates back to around 1765, as evidenced by the ceramic tiles embedded in the eastern side of the building.

The church has features of Byzantine architecture and has undergone several renovations, the most recent being in 1953. In 1978, the frescoes were cleaned and conserved, depicting various religious scenes and saints, offering evidence of the artistic tradition of the time.

In addition to its liturgical life, St. George's Church is also a centre of charitable work in the area. Three chapels belong to the parish: St. Demetrios, St. Catherine and St. Nicholas, which contribute to the preservation of the religious tradition and the community.

The church is a meeting point for residents and is known for the festivals organised in honour of St. George, attracting visitors who want to live the authentic religious experience of the area.
