Church of St George of Nigrita
Church of St George of Nigrita
The historic church of the 18th century
The Church of St. George in Nigrita is one of the most historic churches of the region, built on the eastern hill to the south, in the oldest district of the city, the "Tsakalades".
The church was consecrated on 3 April 1753 by Metropolitan Ioannikio of Serres, according to a written testimony discovered in 2006. However, this date is not necessarily an indication of the exact age of the church, as many churches were consecrated much later than their original construction.
The architecture of the church follows the Byzantine tradition, with the three-aisled basilica and the impressive wooden carved iconostasis being the main features. The iconostasis is decorated with details that reveal the craftsmanship of the artisans of the period and combines ecclesiastical art with secular elements.
Apart from being a centre of religious life, the church was also an important social reference point for the inhabitants of Nigrita during the Turkish occupation. Today, Agios Georgios remains a living place of worship and preservation of local tradition, continuing to attract worshippers and visitors who honour its rich cultural heritage.
