Kelyfos (Helona) Island

The divers island in the shape of a turtle

Between Kassandra and Sithonia, about three miles from Neos Marmaras, lies the small island that always stays in the background in both legs of Halkidiki. This island is called Kelyfos Island and covers an area of almost one square kilometer. Locals commonly refer to it as "Turtle"(Helona) due to its striking resemblance to an actual turtle. Accessible only by sea, either by boat or ferry, it is uninhabited except for the wild goats that freely roam its dense vegetation. For those who dare to visit, the island offers a wide range of attractions rarely found in a single location. You can visit it by renting a boat from Neos Marmaras or Kassandra.

The underwater morphology surrounding the island, with its diverse coral formations, starfish, numerous fish species, and crustaceans, as well as the topography of its rocky cliffs and caves, is a magnet for scuba diving or snorkeling enthusiasts. More than 10 points have been designated as starting points for underwater explorations, providing the opportunity to examine the island beneath the surface of the sea. Additionally, there is a beach on its coast, with white sand and transparent turquoise waters, creating the impression of an exotic shoreline.

The island remains virtually untouched by human intervention and lacks any facilities, so visitors should come prepared with their supplies during their stay on Turtle Island. A stroll among the pine trees and wild olive trees will reveal the ruins of a Roman settlement, indicating its possible past use for strategic purposes.
