Ancient Mendi
A great city of antiquity
Ancient Mendi was an important city of ancient Halkidiki, located on the west coast of the Kassandra peninsula, near the modern village of Kalandra. The city was known for its excellent wine and trade, being one of the most prosperous centres of the region in antiquity.
It was founded by Eretrian settlers in the 8th century BC and quickly developed into one of the richest and most powerful cities of Halkidiki. It was a member of the Athenian Alliance and had a significant naval power. Excavations have revealed parts of the city, including houses, public buildings, parts of the wall, and various other finds that demonstrate the city's economic and cultural prosperity. Coins and pottery have also been found, demonstrating the intense commercial activity.
Mendi was famous for its wine, which was exported throughout the ancient world. Amphorae with Mendi wine were known for their quality and have been found in various regions of the Mediterranean. It is an important archaeological site, offering a glimpse into the history and culture of ancient Halkidiki, as well as the life of a city that was once a centre of trade and culture.
