The History of Water Supply and Provision in Thessaloniki

The Thessaloniki Water Supply Museum is housed in the old pumping station of EYATh (Municipal Water Supply Company), which was constructed in 1890 to provide water to the city. This museum is the first of its kind in Greece and aims to preserve and showcase the history of water supply and distribution in Thessaloniki.

Visitors to the museum can see authentic machinery and equipment that were used during the operation of the pumping station, including steam-driven pumps and boilers. The exhibits also feature photographic material, maps, and archival documents that narrate the history of the city's water supply from the Ottoman era to the present day.

One of the most significant exhibits is the old steam-powered pumping station, which remains on-site and serves as the centerpiece of the museum. Here, visitors can observe how the early pumps functioned to provide water to Thessaloniki.

The museum serves as an educational and informational space for the public, emphasizing the importance of water management and conservation. Through its exhibits and programs, it promotes awareness of environmental issues related to water and sustainability.
