Monument of the Old Jewish Cemetery

A Symbol of the History and Heritage of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki

The monument of the Old Jewish Cemetery in Thessaloniki spans horizontally and features a seven-branched bronze menorah, a representation of scattered marble slabs with Jewish symbols reminiscent of the graves from the old cemetery, and a bronze Star of David.

To the right of the monument, five vertical marble plaques display text in five languages: Greek, Hebrew, Spanish, French, and English.

The inscription reads: "The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki under the rectorship of Ioannis Mylopoulos and the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki erected this monument in memory of the old Jewish cemetery, which was located at this site for centuries until its destruction in 1942 by the Nazi occupiers and their collaborators. May the memory of the Holocaust victims be eternal. June 2014."

The unveiling of the monument took place on Sunday, November 9, 2014, at the site next to the Observatory of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The monument honors the memory of the Holocaust victims and symbolizes the history and heritage of the Jewish community of Thessaloniki.
