Old Teaching School - Former Domestic School

A 19th-Century Building That Was the First Greek School of Its Time

The Old Teaching School, also known as the former Domestic School, is a significant historical building in Thessaloniki, closely associated with the education of the Greek community during the Ottoman era. Acquired after the devastating fire of 1890, it began operating as a Greek school in 1893, marking the beginning of organized education in the city.

It was the first teaching school in Thessaloniki, a center of learning that provided educational opportunities for the youth of that time. Later, the building was converted into a Domestic School, enhancing professional training and knowledge in the field of home economics.

Today, the Old Teaching School belongs to the Municipality of Thessaloniki and is used for various educational activities. It also occasionally hosts the Lifelong Learning Center. The building’s history reflects the progress of education in the city and the Greek community's commitment to developing a comprehensive educational structure during challenging times.
