Statue of Pavlos Mela
Statue of Pavlos Mela
Dedicated to the iconic hero of the Macedonian Struggle
The statue of Pavlos Melas, made of bronze, honors one of the most famous heroes of the Macedonian Struggle. The statue was commissioned to the sculptor, granddaughter of Pavlos Melas, by the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle.
The statue depicts Pavlos Melas in a straight pose, wearing his uniform and equipment. In his right hand he holds his rifle, which rests on the ground, while his left hand rests on his waist. On the back of his rifle is engraved the phrase 'Long live Macedonia'. His face exudes confidence, boldness and determination, while the details of his clothing and facial features are rendered realistically.
The statue is placed on a marble pedestal on which his name and the dates of his birth and death are inscribed ('PAVLOS MELAS 1870 - 1904').
The statue is located at the point where Pavlos Melas Street meets the beach, in Tsirogianni Park, opposite the White Tower, in an area of great historical and symbolic importance for the city of Thessaloniki.
