Byzantine Church of Saint George Kryoneriti
Byzantine Church of Saint George Kryoneriti
One of the most important Byzantine monuments of Serres
One of the most important Byzantine monuments of the Serres region is the monastery of St. George of Kryoneritis, in the beautiful area of Agioi Anargyroi east of the town. Built in 1298, it is a subject of study in ecclesiastical art, and owes its name to a spring of cold water that used to gush into the courtyard but has now dried up.
The Church of St. George is a three-aisled, stone-built basilica and over the centuries it has undergone several alterations so that today it includes several elements from different architectural styles. Of particular artistic and historical value are the hagiographies inside the church, while the iconography of Panagia Vrefokratousa of 1694 stands out.
The church also has a unique historical symbolism, as in its courtyard the city of Serres surrendered to the Ottomans in 1383 and the reception of the Greek liberation army in 1913.
