Orpheus Cave in Alistrati

Orpheus Cave, located near Petrota Alistratis, is one of the most impressive natural treasures in the Serres region. Also known as the "Labyrinthine Cave," it stretches 300 meters in length, with a width ranging from 20 to 30 meters, offering a stunning display of stalactites and stalagmites that captivate visitors.

Archaeological excavations conducted by the Ephorate of Paleoanthropology and Speleology have uncovered valuable findings, including semicircular hearths, fragments of utilitarian pottery, clay spindles, animal bones, and tools made of bone and stone. Particularly significant are the three sections of human skulls and jaws discovered, providing evidence of the cave's long-term use.

The excavations reveal that the cave was used as a site for seasonal habitation and agricultural and pastoral activities, with dates ranging from 6640 to 1690 BC. Orpheus Cave is not just a natural phenomenon but also a journey back in time, shedding light on the daily life of our ancestors.
